How it works with a webcam

VideoBGNinja isn't a live camera plugin — it works on a file you upload. So record your webcam clip first with whatever you already use (the Camera app, OBS, QuickTime, Photo Booth or your meeting tool's record button), save it as MP4 or WebM, and drop it in. The AI then separates you from your real background.

VideoBGNinja is built for footage with a person in it — a talking head, a vlog, an interview, a dance clip. It understands what a human looks like and tracks you through the whole clip, so you don't need a green screen or special lighting. Pets and objects sometimes work too, but expect softer edges there.

Put yourself over anything

For the cleanest cutout, a few small filming choices help a lot: even light on your face, a bit of contrast with the wall behind you, and a steady camera. The filming guide covers it.

It doesn't run live on a call — what to do instead

Worth being blunt about this, because it's the thing people expect: this is not a camera plugin. It won't sit between your webcam and Zoom and replace your background in real time. It works on a file, after you've recorded it. Live matting on a call is a genuinely different product with different trade-offs — it has to finish each frame in under 30 milliseconds on your own laptop, which is exactly why the version built into Zoom and Teams looks the way it does.

What works well is recording the pieces you reuse. Most people who want a webcam cut-out don't actually need it live — they need it in something they're producing:

• Intros and outros for videos, where you're floating over a title card
• Lower thirds and reaction corners, dropped over slides, gameplay or a screen recording
• Stream overlays — load the transparent WebM as a media source in OBS and it plays with real transparency, no chroma key filter, no green fringe
• Explainer segments, where you talk over a product shot instead of next to it

For a stream, the trick is to record a handful of short loops once — an idle loop, a "be right back" loop, an intro — and keep them as WebM files. They cost nothing to play back and look better than a live filter, because they were matted properly instead of in a 30ms budget.

Webcam footage has its own failure modes

Webcams are the hardest source this tool gets, and it's not the resolution — it's what the camera does automatically. Knowing these takes a bad cut-out and makes it a good one on the second try:

• Auto-exposure hunting. Cheap webcams re-meter constantly. When the brightness of your face shifts mid-clip the edge quality shifts with it. If your camera app lets you lock exposure, lock it.
• Low light. In a dim room the sensor pushes gain and your image fills with noise. Noise sits right where the model is looking for an edge, so the outline gets soft and restless. One lamp pointed at your face fixes more than any setting.
• A window behind you. Backlight turns you into a silhouette. The model can still find you, but the rim of your hair and shoulders blends into the bright wall and comes out chewed. Turn 90 degrees so the window lights you instead of framing you.
• Hair and headphones. Loose or curly hair and the arm of an over-ear headset are the two edges that get simplified. Nothing to do about the hair, but tucking a headset cable out of the silhouette helps.
• A wall the same tone as your skin or shirt. Contrast is what an edge is made of. A beige wall behind a beige jumper gives the model very little to work with; anything a shade or two different is easier.

None of these are settings on this site — there's nothing to tune here. They're all decided before you press record, which is the whole reason to know them.
