A green screen assumes you can buy one, find room to hang it, and light it evenly: not something everyone has. Over the 40 days before this was written, real visitors (not bots) reached this site from 109 different countries: the largest groups came from India (204 views), the United States (199) and Germany (82), with meaningful traffic from Brazil, Pakistan, France, Indonesia and the Philippines too. No single country came close to a majority.
That spread matters for a page that exists specifically because a green screen isn't universal: someone filming on a phone in a small room doesn't need to source fabric, a frame and extra lamps first, wherever they happen to be. Among the named tool pages on this site, this specific "no green screen" framing was opened 5 times in the tracked period: a smaller number than the plain background-remover page, which suggests most people arrive already knowing they don't have a green screen, rather than searching to confirm it's possible.

Isn't this basically a "green background" tool then?
Close, but backwards. A green background is what a real green screen clip gives you before editing, and that green still has to be keyed out in another app. This tool never needs a background green color in the first place: it finds the person and returns a transparent clip. People who look for a green background image, a green background pic or a background green image often want a still to key over; for stills BGNinja is the better fit, and for video the transparent WebM removes the need for a green image background at all. If you do want green, take the green-screen MP4: a flat image green background on every frame, effectively a green background background behind the subject, which your editor keys in one click. Any background image you choose afterwards, a photo, a gradient or a background pic from a stock site, can then go behind the subject, whether that background image green or not.
So what do I actually get back?

Is this a video background remover built for one person, or does it handle a group?
It's built for people and usually keeps everyone it recognises as a person, but it works best with one clear person in frame. With a group and a lot of overlap the edges get softer, and someone half out of frame can be partly lost.
Does this give me a video with no background, or just a video with no sound?
A video with no background is the output: a transparent WebM, plus a green-screen MP4 and an alpha matte, with the person kept and everything else gone. Your original audio carries over into the WebM and the MP4, and a silent source stays silent. Processing videos with no background for a whole project works the same way, one upload at a time.
Do I need green screen backgrounds or footage first?
No. You don't need to buy green screen backgrounds (the fabric or paper backdrops some kits sell) or the stand that comes with them, because this tool never looks for a colour to key out. Stock sites also sell green screen background footage, pre-shot plates of an empty backdrop, but that solves a different problem from removing the background of footage you already have. And a free green screen background download is usually a digital image to put behind you on a video call, which this page doesn't do either.
Can this remove the background from a still image, not just video, down to a PNG?
Not here: this tool is built for video. Free covers the transparent WebM, the green-screen MP4 and the alpha matte, alpha included: a video background remover with alpha is not a paid add-on here, because the transparent WebM carries a real alpha channel, and only the ProRes MOV needs the paid pass. Existing green-screen footage goes through the same background removal, since the AI doesn't key the colour; it finds the person.
Does this handle 3-minute clips, or cut out a specific character from a busy scene?
Not on the free tier: a video background remover 3 minutes long needs a pass, either the free monthly pass for e-mail subscribers or the paid one, and both raise the limit from 90 seconds to 4 minutes; free stays capped at 90 seconds and 2 GB. Either tier can cut background from video the same way: the model tracks one main subject, so cutout character from video works best with one clear person in frame, not a crowd.
