This category changed: the free favourite, Unscreen, has been folded into Canva and now sits behind Canva Pro. So what is left that exports a clip without a watermark or a subscription? We checked ten of them, by name, on each tool's own pages; last check 2 October 2026. VideoBGNinja is ours; the rest you can verify in a minute.

"Not stated" means the vendor's own page doesn't say either way on the day we checked. Picsart's tool page describes the remover as free but gives no limits, account rule or watermark policy, so we left those blank rather than repeat numbers from other sites.
Ten tools, one honest limitation each
Every tool here was built to remove a video background at some point. What differs is the catch, and it rarely sits above the fold. VideoBGNinja is the video background remover free entry in the table: one clip at a time, no account, 10 clips a day. The bg remover video row for Adobe Express looks free until you check video specifically, since that needs its Premium plan. A bg video remover needs checking against its own pages, not marketing copy, which is why every row links to the page we read.
- Unscreen is gone. It stopped processing videos on 1 December 2025, and Canva's help centre says unscreen.com closed on 29 June 2026; the address now redirects to Canva.
- Canva's Video Background Remover is a Canva Pro feature. Its image remover is a separate tool; neither gives video removal on the free plan.
- Adobe Express removes an image background free, but its own product page says video background removal needs an Adobe Express Premium plan.
- Picsart calls its video remover free, but the tool page names no limits, so check the export before you rely on it.
- VEED lets you remove and edit in the same timeline, but the remover is free to try once; after that it needs the Pro plan.
- Cutout.pro, also written cut out pro, gives a 5-second preview at 360p for free, enough to judge the cutout background quality, not to export a real clip. A Google or Facebook account is required, and full clips use video credits (from $9 a minute). Cutout pro is the short name people search for.
- Kapwing lets you try the remover after registering, but exporting the result needs a paid plan, and free-plan exports carry a watermark.
- Runway retired its Remove Background tool in July 2026; what's left is generative editing, which is a different job.
- Clipchamp is bundled with Windows, but its AI remover only works on images; for video it can only key out a green, blue or red screen.
- After Effects is the manual ceiling for quality, but it's a paid Adobe app with a 7-day trial, not a free tool.
- VideoBGNinja is built for people: pets, products and other objects are unreliable, a clip with nobody in it can come back almost empty, and fine flyaway hair is the hardest case.
Every tool that does the job hands back a video file, most commonly an MP4; VideoBGNinja adds a transparent WebM, an alpha matte and a short transparent GIF.
Where the others beat VideoBGNinja
- Replacing the background in the same tool. Canva, Adobe Express, Kapwing and VEED put the cut-out straight into an editor with templates and stock backgrounds, and Cutout.pro lets you pick a colour or upload a new backdrop. VideoBGNinja only gives you the cut-out (transparent or on green); the new background goes in afterwards, in your own editor.
- Longer clips. Adobe Express takes clips up to 2 minutes on Premium; our free tier stops at 90 seconds (4 minutes with a pass).
- Anything that isn't a person. Our model is trained on people. For products or pets, a tool with a manual brush or After Effects rotoscoping will do better.
- Manual control. After Effects gives frame-by-frame control on difficult footage that no one-click tool, ours included, can match.
Why people pick VideoBGNinja
Only what our own code does, nothing about the competition:
- No account at all: there is no login, and a pass is a token in your browser.
- No watermark on any export, free tier included.
- 10 free clips a day, each up to 90 seconds and 2 GB, exported at up to 1920 px.
- Four files per clip: a transparent WebM with a real alpha channel, a green-screen MP4, an alpha matte and a transparent GIF of the first 10 seconds.
- Your upload is deleted right after processing and the result is wiped after 45 minutes.

- You already pay for Canva or Adobe — use what you have; the removal sits inside the editor you already know.
- Difficult footage: fast motion, fine hair, semi-transparent objects, or no person at all — rotoscoping by hand in After Effects. No one-click tool handles those well, ours included.
- You want the background swapped and the video edited in one place — Kapwing or VEED on a paid plan, since the removal sits inside a full editor.
- You just want to see a cut-out before paying for anything — Cutout.pro's 5-second preview, or a free clip here.
Why this is harder than a photo
A photo background remover runs the model once. A video runs it on every frame: a thirty-second clip at 30 fps is 900 separate cutouts that also have to stay consistent, or the edge flickers. That is why video removal costs so much more compute than a photo, and why the free tiers here are so much stingier than in the photo category, where an image background free of charge is easy to find.
It also sets the honest expectation: shoot against a plain, evenly lit wall, keep some contrast between you and it, and avoid fast motion. Good input matters more here than the choice of tool. If you can film against a real green screen, do; nothing automatic beats it on fine hair.
How we checked
On 2 October 2026 we opened each tool's own product, help or pricing page (linked in the table) and noted what it says about free use, sign-up, watermarks and price. Compared with our first check on 4 September, four rows changed: Runway's remover has been retired, Clipchamp turned out to do AI removal on images only, Kapwing and VEED let you try the tool but need a paid plan to export, and we could no longer confirm Picsart's numbers on its own page, so we removed them.
We did not run one clip through all ten tools and rank the edges: results vary enormously with lighting and motion, and we don't make quality claims without a proper test set. VideoBGNinja runs on our own GPUs in the Netherlands, which is what makes a free export possible.

Is VideoBGNinja free with no watermark?
Yes: no account and no watermark, for up to 10 clips a day of 90 seconds each. Ads around the tool pay for the GPU time, and an optional one-time pass adds longer clips and 4K for those who want them.
What happened to Unscreen?
It stopped processing videos on 1 December 2025, after Canva took it over, and Canva's help centre says unscreen.com closed on 29 June 2026. The address now redirects to Canva's Video Background Remover, which is a Canva Pro feature, so the free, no-login workflow people bookmarked is gone. Do I need a green screen?
No, that is the whole point: the model separates you from whatever is behind you. A green screen still gives the cleanest possible edge, so use one if you have it.
Why does the edge flicker on my clip?
Because each frame is cut out separately and fast motion or low contrast makes the model change its mind between frames. Slower movement, a plainer wall and even lighting fix most of it.
Can I do this to a photo instead?
Yes — BGNinja is the photo version, also free and without a watermark.
Does Adobe Express remove video backgrounds for free?
Not the video version. Adobe Express removes an image background free with just an Adobe account, but its own product page states that removing a video background needs an Adobe Express Premium plan — the free tier stops at photos.
Is there a similar free comparison for restoring old photos?
